Andalusia Seeks Role in National Blackout Investigation After Government Points to Local Power Failures

15-05-2025

The regional government of Andalusia has announced its intention to join the national committee of experts investigating the causes of the massive power outage that left all of Spain without electricity and mobile networks on April 28. This move comes after the central government identified Granada and Seville, along with Badajoz, as the initial points where power generation losses occurred, sparking controversy and criticism from Andalusian officials.

Jorge Paradela, the regional Minister of Industry, Energy, and Mines, emphasized Andalusia's readiness to contribute technical expertise to the investigation. "We have excellent technicians who can provide valuable insights, especially since the focus has been placed on our region as one of the starting points of the problem," Paradela stated during a press conference. This announcement underscores the growing tension between the regional and central governments over the handling of the blackout's aftermath.

The central government's third vice president and Minister for the Ecological Transition, Sara Aagesen, had previously pointed to specific power generation losses in Andalusia during a parliamentary session, a statement that has been met with skepticism by the regional government. Paradela criticized the lack of official communication from the Ministry or Red Eléctrica, Spain's electricity grid operator, questioning the motives behind highlighting Andalusia in the context of the blackout.

As the investigation into the blackout continues, the request by Andalusia to participate in the expert committee reflects the region's desire to have a say in uncovering the truth behind the incident. With both sides presenting differing views on the origins and implications of the power failure, the situation highlights the complexities of managing and diagnosing failures within a national energy system that operates as a unified market.
