Automation Overhaul for Madrid's Metro Line 6: What Commuters Need to Know

12-05-2025

The Madrid Metro Line 6 is set to undergo a significant transformation, with automation works beginning on May 31. This ambitious project, budgeted at over 800 million euros, aims to introduce driverless trains by 2027, promising to reduce wait times to just two minutes between trains and increase capacity by 17%. The modernization will unfold in two phases, affecting different segments of the line at different times to minimize disruption.

Starting May 31, the western arc of the circular line, from Moncloa to Méndez Álvaro, will be closed until September 12. The second phase, from September 13 to December 31, will see the eastern arc, from Moncloa to Legazpi, undergo similar upgrades. Throughout this period, the Arganzuela-Planetario station will serve as a coordination center for the works, remaining closed to passengers.

To mitigate the impact on daily commuters, the Madrid Municipal Transport Company (EMT) will operate a free alternative bus service, covering all affected stops with a frequency of three to five minutes. Additional shuttle services will connect Batán with Lucero and Legazpi with Plaza Elíptica, while the route and operating hours of bus line 180 will be extended, offering free rides during the closure period.

This automation project represents a leap forward for Madrid's public transport system, with Line 6 poised to become the first in the network to operate without drivers. The upgrades, including the replacement of traditional ballast with concrete platforms and the installation of platform screen doors, are designed to enhance safety, efficiency, and passenger capacity, marking a new era for the Madrid Metro.
