Starting July 1, Renfe, Spain's national railway company, will phase out its free commuter passes, introducing a new system of discounted travel options aimed primarily at young people and children. This move marks the end of an era for free travel on Cercanías and Media Distancia routes, transitioning to a model that offers substantial discounts for specific age groups. The new passes, available for purchase from June 23, include free travel for children born between January 1, 2011, and December 31, 2025, and reduced rates for teenagers and young adults.
The new pricing structure introduces a flat monthly fee of 20 euros for unlimited travel within all Cercanías zones, with young people born between January 1, 1999, and December 31, 2010, eligible for a further reduced rate of 10 euros. Additionally, a 10-trip pass will be available, with prices varying by zone and valid for one year from the date of purchase. For medium-distance travel, discounts of up to 40% will be applied, with young travelers receiving a 50% discount and children under 15 traveling for free.
To access these new discounts, travelers will need to obtain the Renfe&Tú card, a personalized travel card featuring the holder's photo and an electronic chip. The application process, which can be initiated online or at station ticket offices, requires a copy of the applicant's ID and a passport-style photo. Renfe has indicated that processing times may extend up to two weeks, advising travelers to apply early to ensure their cards are ready by the July 1 launch date.
This overhaul of Renfe's fare system reflects a broader shift towards more sustainable and targeted subsidy models in public transportation. By focusing discounts on younger demographics, Renfe aims to encourage the use of public transport among the next generation of travelers while ensuring the system's financial viability. The changes also align with adjustments in other public transport discounts in Madrid, where subsidies for Metro travel will decrease from 60% to 40% starting June 30, prompting a rush among commuters to take advantage of the higher discount before it expires.
