A recent study conducted by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) and the BarcelonaBeta Brain Research Center (BBRC) has shed light on the potential benefits of increasing physical activity during middle age to combat Alzheimer's disease. The research, published in the journal 'Alzheimer's & Dementia', followed 337 individuals aged 45 to 65 with a family history of Alzheimer's, tracking their physical activity levels and brain health over four years.
The findings revealed that participants who adhered to the World Health Organization's (WHO) recommended levels of physical activity—150 to 300 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity per week—showed less accumulation of beta-amyloid protein in their brains. Beta-amyloid is known to impair neuronal communication when it accumulates, playing a significant role in the development of Alzheimer's symptoms.
Müge Akinci, the lead author of the study and a doctoral researcher at ISGlobal and BBRC, emphasized the importance of these findings, noting that an estimated 13% of Alzheimer's cases worldwide could be attributed to physical inactivity. The study underscores the direct impact of physical activity on brain health, beyond its known benefits for cardiovascular and mental health.
The research team advocates for promoting physical activity among middle-aged adults as a preventive measure against Alzheimer's. They highlight that even small increases in activity levels can lead to significant reductions in beta-amyloid accumulation, offering a practical strategy for individuals to protect their brain health as they age.
