The Institute of Memory, Coexistence, and Human Rights, Gogora, has genetically identified the remains of six more victims from the Francoist prison in Orduña, recovered from the local cemetery during the 2022 and 2024 campaigns. This marks a significant step in the ongoing effort to bring closure to the families affected by the Franco regime's policies.
In the coming days, a team will travel to Badajoz and Málaga to privately deliver the remains of four of these victims to their families, as requested by the relatives. The identified individuals include José Gómez Narváez, Manuel Vivas Fernández, José Pozo García, and Antonio Bootello Negrete, whose stories reflect the widespread impact of the Francoist repression across different regions of Spain.
With these latest identifications, the total number of remains identified and returned to families has risen to 17 out of 93 recovered. The challenge now is to locate as many descendants as possible to identify the remaining 76 victims. The majority of the 225 prisoners who died in the Orduña concentration and prison camp between 1937 and 1941 were from Extremadura, highlighting the regional disparities in the Francoist repression.
The efforts of Gogora not only aim to provide answers to the families of the victims but also to strengthen ties with local authorities in Extremadura and other regions to explore new avenues of collaboration. This work is crucial in shedding light on a dark chapter of Spanish history and ensuring that the memory of those who suffered under the Franco regime is not forgotten.
