Spain's public transport sector experienced a notable uptick in March, with high-speed rail and urban bus services leading the charge. According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), the high-speed rail segment saw a 17.2% increase in passengers compared to the same month last year, totaling 3.7 million users. This growth underscores the segment's rising preference among Spaniards for long-distance travel.
Urban bus transport also posted impressive gains, with a national increase of 10.8%. Regions such as Andalusia and Castilla y León reported growth rates of 12.9% and 14.5%, respectively, outperforming the national average. The Basque Country led all regions with a staggering 22.3% rise in bus passengers, highlighting a robust recovery and growing reliance on public transport systems across Spain.
The overall public transport usage in March reached over 508.8 million passengers, marking an 8.4% increase from March 2024. This growth was mirrored in urban and interurban transport, which grew by 10% and 5.4%, respectively. The data reflects a continuing trend of recovery and expansion in Spain's public transport networks, with high-speed rail and bus services at the forefront of this positive development.
Despite the general upward trend, some segments experienced declines. Railway transport saw a 2.2% decrease, primarily due to drops in Commuter and Medium-Distance services. However, the Long-Distance segment, including high-speed rail, grew by 11.1%, further cementing its position as a key component of Spain's transport infrastructure. As Spain moves forward, the sustained growth in public transport usage signals a shift towards more sustainable and efficient mobility solutions among its citizens.
