Spain's Top Judge Warns Against Undermining Judiciary with Public Criticism

12-06-2025

In a strong defense of judicial independence, Isabel Perelló, President of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) and the Supreme Court, has publicly denounced the increasing pressures and insults faced by judges in Spain. Speaking at the inauguration of the XXXIII Conference of Senior Judges of Spain in Alicante, Perelló highlighted the challenges confronting the judiciary in maintaining its impartiality amidst growing public and political scrutiny.

Perelló's remarks come at a time when the judiciary finds itself at the center of heated debates, with some decisions facing unprecedented levels of criticism. She emphasized that while judicial rulings are open to debate and critique, personal attacks and undue pressures on judges are unacceptable. 'The loss of respect for individuals within institutions, especially the courts of justice, has reached levels that should never have been attained,' Perelló stated, calling for a restoration of respect towards the judiciary.

The CGPJ president also pointed out that the Spanish legal system is equipped with sufficient safeguards to correct any judicial errors, ensuring that all rulings can be reviewed impartially by different judges. This mechanism, she argued, should alleviate concerns over judicial decisions without resorting to public denunciations that question the legitimacy of the judiciary itself. 'Public statements that challenge the actions of specific judges and even cast doubt on the legitimacy of judicial institutions are unbecoming of an advanced democratic state,' Perelló warned.

Concluding her address, Perelló urged all public authorities and individuals to cease any form of pressure or interference in judicial work. She reaffirmed the judiciary's commitment to upholding the constitution and the rule of law, calling for collective efforts to strengthen public trust in democratic institutions. Her message was clear: respect for judicial independence is not just a legal obligation but a cornerstone of democracy that must be preserved at all costs.
