Spanish Far-Right Politician Steps Down Following Domestic Abuse Sentence

25-09-2025

A councilor for the far-right Vox party in Benicàssim, Enrique Mulet, has been convicted of gender-based violence offenses against his wife and will resign from his municipal position. The Court of Violence Against Women No. 1 in Castellón found Mulet guilty of injury offenses committed during a domestic dispute at the family home on August 31.

The court established as proven facts that following an argument, Mulet pushed his wife against a wall with the intention of diminishing her physical integrity. The sentence noted that no medical injury was documented because the victim declined to visit emergency medical services or be examined by a forensic doctor. The ruling was issued by conformity after the accused acknowledged the facts, avoiding a trial.

Mulet received a sentence of 32 days of community service and a 16-month prohibition from approaching within 300 meters of the victim or communicating with her by any means. The penalty included a one-third reduction from the most severe punishment requested by the public prosecutor due to the conformity agreement. The court also revoked his right to possess and carry weapons for 16 months and ordered payment of legal costs.

Vox announced that Mulet would formally surrender his council seat "in the coming hours" to prevent his personal situation from affecting the institutional work of the municipal group. The party stated it had urged the councilor to step down, emphasizing its "zero tolerance position against violence" and commitment to ethical standards for public officials. The resignation came after political pressure mounted, with opposition groups demanding Mulet's departure following media reports of the conviction.
