Spanish Journalist Shares Heartbreaking Personal Story During Cooking Competition

23-09-2025

Spanish journalist Mariló Montero shared a deeply personal tragedy during Monday's episode of MasterChef Celebrity, revealing that her father and closest friend died together in a car accident in 2000. The emotional disclosure occurred during an outdoor challenge filmed in Formentera, where contestants were preparing seafood dishes while engaging in personal conversations.

Montero's revelation came when fellow contestant Alejo Sauras asked if she had a soulmate. The journalist explained that at age 19, while living in Costa Rica, her father had arranged for her to meet a young woman from Navarra through an acquaintance. "We became intimate friends," Montero recounted, describing the woman as her soulmate before delivering the devastating news: "She died in a car with my father."

The accident occurred when Montero's father went to pick up her friend from the airport after she had visited the journalist in Sevilla. According to Montero's account, her father entered a dangerous section of road known as a black spot and collided with a worker's van. "My father made a mistake and they both died instantly," she stated, emphasizing that the van driver was not at fault.

Despite the tragic nature of her story, Montero displayed remarkable composure, telling Sauras that the incident happened more than two decades ago and that she has since moved forward. "You should only cry about things once. If you cry twice, it's bad," she explained, adding her philosophical perspective: "Life doesn't deceive you - you come into life to leave it, and that's it."
