Spanish Police Dismantle Kidnapping Ring in Vigo, Arrest Four Including Portuguese Leader

01-05-2025

In a significant crackdown on organized crime, the Guardia Civil has dismantled a criminal network based in Vigo, Pontevedra, specializing in kidnappings and extortion. Four individuals, including a Portuguese national believed to be the ringleader, have been arrested in connection with the operation dubbed 'Operation Yaunde'. The investigation was sparked by a complaint filed by a relative of one of the victims on November 15, revealing that two individuals were being held captive with a ransom demand of 500,000 euros for their release.

The victims, who had traveled to Vigo to finalize a business deal, were violently ambushed upon their arrival. They were forced into vehicle trunks and taken to a marginal area near the city, where they were brutally assaulted and restrained with tape over their eyes and mouths. The captors held the victims in various locations over three days, even crossing into Portugal at one point, while extorting their families for ransom.

On November 16, the hostages were released near the Vigo train station, where they were found by the Guardia Civil and provided with medical attention for their injuries. The information provided by the victims was crucial in piecing together the case, leading to the full identification of the perpetrators. This operation highlights the Guardia Civil's commitment to combating serious organized crime and ensuring the safety of citizens.

Following the arrests, judicial proceedings have seen one of the suspects remanded in custody without bail, while another has been released under provisional measures, including passport surrender and a ban on leaving the country. The alleged crimes under investigation include kidnapping, extortion, and membership in a criminal organization. The case continues to unfold as authorities work to bring all involved to justice.
