Spanish Political Parties Face Scrutiny Over Parliamentary Group Fund Transfers

23-09-2025

Vox's national spokesperson José Antonio Fúster has defended the practice of parliamentary and municipal groups contributing money to political parties as "legal," citing that in 2022 the PSOE received "8.6 million from its municipal groups," the PP obtained "about 5 million," and Abascal's party received "133,000" euros. Fúster made these statements during a press conference following Vox's Political Action Committee meeting, responding to allegations from former Balearic Parliament spokesperson Idoia Ribas about internal pressures to divert "enormous amounts of money" from the parliamentary group to the party.

The controversy centers on financial transfers from Vox's parliamentary groups to the national party, with specific attention on Vox Baleares transferring nearly 100,000 euros to Vox national in 2024, allegedly destined for the Disenso Foundation. Ribas, who left the party in July, claimed she faced pressure from national leadership to transfer "enormous amounts of public money" assigned to Vox's parliamentary group in the Balearic Islands to national party accounts, which she said ultimately went to the foundation presided over by Vox leader Santiago Abascal.

Fúster emphasized that all financial arrangements are "legal, all audited by the Court of Auditors, everything is perfect," noting that internal agreements governing transfers from members to the political party follow "a recommendation from the Court of Auditors." He explained that these agreements exist because "the party provides vital services to municipal and parliamentary groups regarding security, positioning, technical office support for proper functioning, coherence, coordination days, and policy" among other services.

The PSIB has characterized the conflict between Vox and its former deputy as primarily Vox's "problem" but also implicated the PP for maintaining Balearic governance with "turncoats and non-attached deputies." The socialist spokesperson stated it seems "normal" for parliamentary groups to allocate part of their subsidy money to parties, while clarifying that control bodies should determine whether such transfers are "properly justified." The party emphasized that Ribas herself must prove the allegations and that the PSIB "will not speak with turncoats."
