Supreme Court Lifts Secrecy on García Ortiz Investigation After Negative Findings

01-05-2025

The Unidad Central Operativa (UCO) of the Guardia Civil has concluded its investigation into the communications of Álvaro García Ortiz, the State Attorney General, finding no new or relevant information in the data provided by WhatsApp and Google to the Supreme Court. The investigation was part of a broader inquiry into the alleged leak of a confidential email related to the partner of Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the President of the Community of Madrid.

Judge Ángel Hurtado of the Supreme Court has decided to lift the secrecy order on two separate pieces of the investigation that were opened last week to analyze the material sent by Ireland and the United States. The UCO's analysis of the Google data from Ireland revealed no new emails of interest to the case, and similarly, the WhatsApp data from the United States contained no unpublished information relevant to the investigation.

This development marks one of the final steps in the judicial process before a decision is made on whether to bring García Ortiz and the provincial prosecutor of Madrid, Pilar Rodríguez, to trial over the alleged leak. The leak in question involved a written confession by Alberto González Amador, Díaz Ayuso's partner, admitting to tax fraud.

The lifting of the secrecy order and the sharing of the UCO's report with the involved parties underscore the transparency of the judicial process in Spain, even in cases involving high-ranking officials. The outcome of this investigation could have significant implications for the legal and political landscape in Spain, as it touches on issues of privacy, confidentiality, and the integrity of public officials.
