Tordesillas and Regional Government Stand Firm on Toro de la Vega Celebration

15-05-2025

The Ayuntamiento de Tordesillas in Valladolid has announced its intention to exhaust all legal avenues to ensure the celebration of the Toro de la Vega, following a recent court ruling that annulled the 2022 modifications to the event's regulations. The local government, led by Miguel Ángel Oliveira, has 30 working days to prepare an appeal to the Supreme Court, emphasizing its commitment to uphold the tradition within the framework of the law and the constitution.

The controversy centers around the adaptation of the Toro de la Vega's regulations to comply with animal welfare laws, specifically the prohibition of killing the bull. The 2022 modifications introduced the use of divisas, a type of spike, instead of lances, aiming to preserve the tradition without causing the animal's death. However, the Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Castilla y León ruled against these changes, siding with the animal rights party PACMA, which argued that the modifications created a 'new spectacle' and circumvented the law.

The Junta de Castilla y León has also expressed its intention to appeal the court's decision, with spokesperson Carlos Fernández Carriedo highlighting the regional government's effort to balance tradition with animal welfare. The Junta views the 2022 regulations as a lawful adaptation that ensures the continuity of the Toro de la Vega with greater respect for animal welfare, and it plans to defend the event's uniqueness and the rights of Tordesillas to preserve its cultural heritage.

As the legal battle unfolds, both the Ayuntamiento de Tordesillas and the Junta de Castilla y León are preparing to present their cases to the Supreme Court. Their actions reflect a broader debate over the preservation of cultural traditions in the face of evolving legal and ethical standards, with the outcome likely to set a precedent for similar disputes across Spain.
