AEMET Forecasts Temperature Swings and Storm Activity Across Spanish Regions

25-09-2025

The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued comprehensive forecasts indicating significant weather variability across Spain's diverse regions. While some areas will experience moderate temperatures and radiant conditions, others face potential showers and storm activity. The climate patterns are being influenced by an Atlantic trough and a low-pressure center in southeastern France, creating marked differences between coastal and inland zones.

Eastern Cantabria, eastern Catalonia, and northern Balearic Islands are expected to see cloudy skies and precipitation, with locally heavy showers and thunderstorms along the coasts of Barcelona and Girona. Meanwhile, most of the country will experience high cloud coverage with morning and evening fog banks in northern and southeastern highlands, as well as western Alborán coastlines where weak rainfall may occur. Maximum temperatures will generally remain stable, though decreases are forecast for the southern third of the country while increases are anticipated in the Meseta and Galicia regions.

A notable development is the anticipated 'veranillo de San Miguel' (St. Michael's little summer), where temperatures are expected to rise above seasonal norms in the coming days. Despite autumn's official arrival, much of Spain will enjoy clear skies and warmer conditions, with some southern areas potentially exceeding 30°C. However, precipitation remains a concern in northeastern Catalonia where locally heavy rains are expected, particularly along the central coastline, while weak rainfall is forecast for eastern Cantabria and the Balearic Islands.

Meteorological uncertainty persists as Spain monitors Hurricane Gabrielle's potential impact. AEMET experts indicate that the country should prepare for significant weather changes that could affect autumn planning. Wind patterns will feature moderate easterly components along coastlines, with stronger intervals in the Strait and Alborán areas, while the Canary Islands will experience moderate trade winds. The combination of these factors creates a complex weather scenario requiring close monitoring in the days ahead.
