Barcelona International Motor Show Kicks Off with Record Chinese Presence

19-05-2025

The 43rd edition of the Barcelona International Motor Show (Automobile Barcelona) has officially opened its doors, marking a significant moment for the automotive industry in Spain. This year's event, held at the Fira de Barcelona in Montjuïc, showcases an unprecedented presence of Chinese automakers, which now account for a third of the exhibitors. The show also highlights the growing importance of electrified vehicles, with over 100 models on display, signaling a shift towards sustainable mobility.

During the inauguration, Jordi Hereu, the Minister of Industry, announced a new Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE) worth €280 million aimed at bolstering the battery industry. This initiative includes €100 million in grants and €180 million in loans, designed to support the sector's transition towards more sustainable production lines. Hereu emphasized the need for transformation in production processes, demand stimulation, and the expansion of the charging network to accommodate the surge in electric vehicles.

The motor show, which runs until next week, is expected to attract over 350,000 visitors, potentially setting a new attendance record. Enrique Lacalle, the show's president, highlighted the event's role in addressing consumer uncertainties regarding technological advancements and mobility models. With the support of ANFAC and the OICA, the organizers have successfully convinced leading automakers to showcase their latest offerings, including a dozen premieres such as the global debut of the Ebro S400 and the European introduction of the MG S5.

Among the highlights is the strong representation of Chinese brands, with MG taking center stage with its new MGS5 EV, making its Spanish debut. The model aims to set a new benchmark in the electric SUV segment, building on the success of the MG4 EV. Alongside, the show features the first 0.0 vehicle in Spain, the MG HS PHEV, a plug-in hybrid that underscores the industry's push towards zero-emission mobility. This year's Automobile Barcelona not only celebrates the passion for automobiles but also underscores the industry's rapid evolution towards electrification and sustainability.
