Salvador Navarro has announced he will not seek re-election as president of the Valencian Business Confederation (CEV), just two weeks after publicly declaring his intention to run for another term. The current president, who also serves as vice president of Spain's CEOE employers' federation, will step down from his role effective November 6, marking a significant shift in the region's business leadership landscape.
The surprise decision comes after Navarro met with Vicente Lafuente, president of the Valencian Metal Federation (Femeval), who expressed his intention to present an alternative candidacy. Navarro described his move as "stepping aside" to prevent potential conflicts within the organization, acknowledging that "there are dissatisfied sectors" within CEV after his many years of leadership. The nomination period remains open until October 22, with the election scheduled for November 6 involving 515 representatives from associated businesses and federations.
Within hours of Navarro's announcement, Lafuente confirmed his candidacy for the CEV presidency, thanking Navarro for his decision and emphasizing his commitment to approach the role with "enthusiasm, responsibility and respect for the institution." Lafuente's candidacy had been widely anticipated after initial reluctance, with the metal federation leader previously indicating he would run if he perceived a risk of organizational fragmentation within the business confederation.
The leadership transition follows Navarro's 14-year tenure at CEV, which began in 2011 when he led the Valencia provincial business organization before expanding its scope to the entire Valencian Community in 2017. Navarro cited his desire to maintain unity within the business community, stating that while political polarization exists, he doesn't want it to extend to CEV. The upcoming election will determine the direction of one of Spain's most significant regional business organizations during a period of economic uncertainty.
