Concerns Rise Over Youth Vaping Trends in Catalonia

29-05-2025

On World Vape Day, British American Tobacco (BAT) emphasized the potential of smokeless nicotine products, such as vapes, heated tobacco, and nicotine pouches, in reducing the harm caused by traditional cigarettes. The company highlighted that these alternatives produce significantly fewer harmful chemicals and could play a crucial role in tobacco harm reduction strategies. Countries like Sweden, Japan, and the UK, where such products are readily available, have seen accelerated declines in smoking rates, according to BAT.

In contrast, health authorities in Catalonia have raised alarms over the increasing use of e-cigarettes among young people. Despite a slight decrease in traditional tobacco use, the region reports a concerning trend of youth experimenting with vaping devices. Esteve Fernández, Secretary of Public Health, warned that these products could serve as a gateway to tobacco addiction, potentially undermining decades of anti-smoking policies.

The debate over the role of smokeless nicotine products in public health continues to divide opinions. While BAT and similar entities advocate for their harm reduction potential, health professionals caution against their appeal to younger demographics. The World No Tobacco Day this year focused on preventing tobacco use in all forms, including e-cigarettes, which are increasingly popular among adolescents.

Data from Catalonia's Health Survey (ESCA) indicates that while the overall use of e-cigarettes remains low, their experimentation among teenagers is a growing concern. Health professionals like Anna Crespiera stress the misleading nature of these products' marketing, which often downplays their health risks. Efforts are now being directed towards preventive campaigns in schools to educate young people about the dangers of nicotine addiction, regardless of the delivery method.
