Technical Glitch Forces Air Europa Boeing 787-900 to Land Twice in Asunción

01-07-2025

An Air Europa Boeing 787-900, en route from Asunción, Paraguay, to Madrid, Spain, was forced to make two emergency landings at the Silvio Pettirossi International Airport due to a reported technical issue. The aircraft, carrying 272 passengers, initially took off at 13:15 local time but encountered problems shortly after, prompting the pilot to declare a 'PAN-PAN' emergency, signaling a need for priority to return to the airport without immediate danger to life.

According to Rubén Aguilar, director of airports at Paraguay's National Civil Aviation Authority (Dinac), the pilot reported a technical problem ten minutes after takeoff, leading to a 20-minute holding pattern at approximately 4,000 meters to dump fuel before the first landing. Passengers were then kept in the terminal as the aircraft prepared for a second attempt to continue its journey to Madrid.

The flight's second departure at 16:11 local time was similarly short-lived, with the pilot reporting the same technical issue 15 minutes after takeoff. This necessitated a return to the airport, with the aircraft touching down around 17:00 local time. The flight was subsequently canceled, leaving passengers to seek alternative arrangements.

The 'PAN-PAN' code, distinct from the more severe 'Mayday', is used in aviation to indicate an urgent situation that requires assistance but does not pose an immediate threat to life. The exact nature of the technical issue faced by the Air Europa flight remains undisclosed, with authorities and the airline likely to conduct further investigations to determine the cause and prevent future occurrences.
