In an unusual incident that unfolded in Valencia, a three-meter-long snake was discovered inside the engine compartment of a car parked in a local garage. The discovery prompted a two-hour operation involving local police and firefighters to safely remove the reptile. The snake, identified as a Montpellier snake, one of the largest species in Europe, was eventually found behind the vehicle's front headlight.
The operation began after the car's owner alerted authorities to the presence of the snake in his vehicle, which was parked in a community garage in the Patraix neighborhood. The local environmental unit, along with firefighters, worked meticulously to dismantle parts of the engine to reach the snake, which was moving inside the compartment.
Montpellier snakes, known scientifically as Malpolon monspessulanus, are native to the Mediterranean region, including Spain. Despite their imposing size and fearsome appearance, their venom is not harmful to humans. These snakes are often found in rural and peri-urban areas, preferring warm and sunny environments.
The snake was safely transported to the Municipal Center for Birds, Urban Avifauna, and Exotic Species in Valencia. Authorities speculate that the snake may have entered the engine compartment while the car was parked in a rural area near Montserrat a week prior to the incident. This event highlights the unexpected encounters between urban life and wildlife in the region.
