A 69-year-old woman died on Sunday afternoon following an explosion and subsequent fire at her two-story home in the village of Villar del Río in Spain's Soria province. The incident occurred around 5:30 PM local time when multiple witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion coming from the residence located in the town square. Emergency services received several calls alerting them to the situation, prompting immediate response from multiple agencies.
The deceased has been identified as Elena Blanco, who served as deputy mayor of Villar del Río. Emergency responders from the Ágreda Tierras Altas Moncayo fire department worked to extinguish the blaze while searching the premises. During their operations, firefighters located and extracted Blanco's body from the rubble of the damaged structure.
Medical personnel from Emergency Medical Services - Sacyl confirmed Blanco's death at the scene. Despite resuscitation attempts by medical teams in an ambulance, the woman succumbed to her injuries. The basic life support ambulance and medical personnel from the Pedro Manrique Continuous Care Point had been dispatched to provide assistance following the emergency call.
The Civil Guard of Soria has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion and subsequent fire. The Coordination Center for Emergencies managed the incident response, coordinating between fire services, medical teams, and law enforcement. The isolated nature of the property in the village square complicated initial rescue efforts as authorities worked to secure the scene and conduct their investigation.
