Feijóo Challenges Sánchez's Coalition Partners to End 'Disparity' Amid Growing Corruption Probes

25-09-2025

Spanish opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo has launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, holding him directly responsible for what he described as a corruption "quagmire" surrounding the government. The Popular Party leader's emergency appearance in Congress followed a judge's decision to refer the case against Sánchez's wife, Begoña Gómez, to a popular jury for potential trial on allegations of misappropriation of public funds.

Feijóo asserted that Sánchez bears direct responsibility for the growing list of judicial scandals involving his inner circle, stating that the situation worsens "every hour" and even "every minute." The opposition leader characterized the government's response as an "unbearable" forward escape, pointing to Tuesday's decision by the Badajoz Court that also validated the investigation against Sánchez's brother for corruption and influence peddling charges.

The PP leader questioned how Sánchez could continue as head of government when "his entire environment" faces investigation for alleged crimes. Feijóo stated that there is no "healthy democracy" where Sánchez remains Spain's prime minister under these circumstances, adding that the president has "surrounded himself with alleged criminality throughout his political career." The opposition leader dismissed claims of judicial persecution as a "smoke screen" that "no longer washes."

Feijóo made a direct appeal to Sánchez's coalition partners, asking how it's possible that "none" of them "put an end to this disparity" given the "collection of indictments, prosecutions, imprisonments and court benches surrounding the president." He urged Sánchez to understand that he cannot continue this way and called on government partners to show him "once and for all the end of the road of a legislature that leads nowhere."
