Indra Explores Market for Defense Industry Expansion Amid Growing Demand

12-05-2025

Indra, the Spanish defense technology company, is actively pursuing its ambitious roadmap to establish itself as a European defense giant. Under the leadership of Ángel Escribano, the company has set its sights on expanding its portfolio through strategic acquisitions. The latest target in its acquisition spree is Iveco Defense Vehicles, the Italian subsidiary known for supplying advanced armored vehicles to the Spanish Ministry of Defense. This move is part of Indra's broader strategy to enhance its land vehicles business, evidenced by the creation of its subsidiary, Indra Land Vehicles.

The potential acquisition of Iveco Defense Vehicles, valued at approximately 1 billion euros, is seen as a pivotal step for Indra to grow in size and capability. Iveco's portfolio includes the Centauro 8x8 for the Spanish Army, the amphibious 8x8 Superav, the 6x6 Guarani, and the versatile 4x4 LMV Guaicurus light vehicles. With a robust order book nearing 4 billion euros, the deal has attracted interest from major players in the defense sector, highlighting the competitive nature of this potential acquisition.

José Vicente de los Mozos, Indra's CEO, has emphasized the company's strategy to accelerate its industrial capacity in defense by exploring around 20 potential companies for acquisitions or partnerships. The focus is on entities that can add capabilities, competencies, or facilitate vertical integration. This approach is aimed at addressing the anticipated demand in the defense sector, with a particular emphasis on reducing delivery times through industrialization of small series and supply chain optimization.

Among the companies under consideration is Escribano Mechanical & Engineering (EM&E), a firm founded by Indra's president, Ángel Escribano. While discussions are in the early stages, the potential merger with EM&E underscores Indra's commitment to strengthening its industrial base. As Indra navigates these strategic moves, the defense industry watches closely, anticipating the emergence of a more formidable European defense player capable of meeting the complex demands of modern warfare and security challenges.
