Letur's Hydraulic Infrastructure Nears Full Restoration After DANA Damage

25-09-2025

The regional government of Castilla-La Mancha has reported significant progress in restoring Letur's hydraulic infrastructure damaged by last October's DANA (isolated high-level depression) weather event. Montserrat Muro, director of the Regional Water Agency, confirmed that reconstruction work is approximately 40% complete and remains on track for full completion by November. The emergency repairs, which form part of the 'Plan Letur 2028', have required specialized techniques due to the municipality's challenging mountainous terrain.

Current work focuses on the final section of the Mirador collector, which runs from the urban center to the Wastewater Treatment Plant (EDAR). Additional projects include cleaning the EDAR pavement and repairing approximately 400 square meters of its central area. The reconstruction also involves restoring the collapsed masonry wall along the access road to the treatment plant. These measures address the vulnerability exposed when floodwaters swept away sanitation collectors in the ravine during the extreme weather event.

Muro emphasized the technical challenges faced during the project's execution, noting that workers had to "scale ravines and use zip lines" to access damaged areas. The emergency declaration enabled accelerated progress on the infrastructure repairs, which represent an investment exceeding one million euros. The difficult terrain complicated restoration efforts but demonstrated the necessity of building resilient systems capable of withstanding future climate-related events.

Speaking at the University of Castilla-La Mancha's course 'Letur frente a la DANA,' Muro outlined the regional government's commitment to developing water supply and treatment systems that are not only climate-resistant but can recover quickly after adverse meteorological phenomena. The priority remains ensuring quality and quantity guarantees for potable water supply, even under difficult scenarios, reflecting the administration's broader strategy for municipalities affected by extreme weather episodes throughout the region.
