Netflix's 'The Ballad of a Small Player' Explores Addiction Amid Macao's Casino Glitter

26-09-2025

Colin Farrell delivers an unhinged performance as a gambling addict in Edward Berger's latest film, 'The Ballad of a Small Player,' which premiered in the Official Section of the San Sebastián Film Festival. The Irish actor confessed to having "a kind of OCD when bringing his characters to life," a trait he fully embraced for his role as Lord Doyle, a compulsive gambler lost in the high-energy environment of Macao. Farrell described the character as someone who has "lost his way," noting that the script appealed to him precisely because it offers no background explanation for Doyle's predicament.

The film, an adaptation of Lawrence Osborne's novel with a screenplay by Rowan Joffe, marks Berger's follow-up to his acclaimed 'Cónclave.' Shot over eight weeks in Macao and two in Hong Kong, the Netflix production leverages the autonomous region's reputation as a gambling mecca. Farrell immersed himself in the role, growing a distinctive mustache and learning to play cards with real casino players in preparation. "I would avoid my character if I met him," Farrell admitted. "He's someone you can't trust because he lies and cheats, though he eventually finds himself and reconsiders."

Berger emphasized that Macao's unique atmosphere directly influenced the film's cinematography and sound design. The director explained that the city's vibrant colors and noisy brilliance provided the perfect contrast to the protagonist's internal crisis. "We needed a place that reflected the essence of a gambling paradise," Berger stated, noting that while locations like Malaysia and Singapore were considered, Macao ultimately offered everything the story required. Farrell echoed this sentiment, describing Macao as "an amazing place and quite a spectacle" that transcends its casino reputation with an ancient, spiritual past.

Despite Farrell's committed performance and Macao's magnetic setting, early indications suggest the film may not replicate the awards success of Berger's previous work. The narrative follows Farrell's character as a fugitive overwhelmed by misfortune, with the film reportedly indulging in excess without fully embracing its dramatic potential. While the project benefits from Farrell's dedicated portrayal and the visually striking backdrop of Macao's casinos and spiritual festivals, the screenplay may ultimately leave audiences wanting more substance beneath the surface glitter.
