Political Tensions Flare as Spanish Government Faces Corruption Allegations

25-09-2025

Spanish Finance Minister and First Vice President María Jesús Montero has reiterated her full confidence in her chief of staff, Carlos Moreno, following judicial revelations that Spain's Treasury Department postponed a tax debt for a company linked to businessman Víctor de Aldama after he met with Moreno. The allegations emerged during Wednesday's congressional control session, where the opposition Popular Party (PP) confronted Montero about a Supreme Court judge's findings that the "corrupt network" in the so-called Koldo case gave "instructions" to her aide.

PP vicesecretary Elías Bendodo directly challenged Montero, asking if she still "puts her hand in the fire" for her chief of staff given the judge's account that Hacienda delayed a tax debt for one of de Aldama's companies following the meeting with Moreno. Montero responded unequivocally: "Absolutely yes." The minister accused the PP of building their opposition on "lies" and "mud" while failing to present constructive proposals for the country.

The controversy stems from a Supreme Court investigation revealing that de Aldama's company received a tax debt postponement after the businessman's meeting with Montero's chief of staff. Judge Leopoldo Puente's findings, initially reported by El Confidencial, indicate the Treasury action occurred following contact with what the judge described as the "corrupt nexus" of the alleged network. The Supreme Court is expected to move toward formal charges and eventual trial proceedings in the medium term.

During the heated parliamentary exchange, Montero turned the tables on the PP by referencing the ongoing legal case involving Alberto González Amador, the partner of Madrid regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso. In a notable verbal slip, Montero initially referred to Ayuso's "brother" before correcting herself to "boyfriend," prompting smiles from opposition benches given that Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's brother also faces pending legal matters. The incident highlighted the increasingly personal nature of Spain's political confrontations as both governing and opposition parties face scrutiny over associates' legal troubles.
