Spanish Unemployment Drops to September Low Not Seen Since 2007

02-10-2025

Spain's unemployment rate fell in September, with the number of registered jobless dropping by 4,846 people to 2,421,665, marking the lowest level for that month since 2007. The Ministry of Labor and Social Economy highlighted that this represents the first decline in September since then, excluding the pandemic-affected years of 2020 and 2021. Since comparable records began in 1996, unemployment has only decreased in September on six occasions: 2005, 2006, 2007, 2020, 2021, and 2025.

The construction sector led the decline with 4,670 fewer unemployed individuals, a 2.6% drop, followed by services, which saw a reduction of 3,067 people. Industry and agriculture also contributed to the downward trend with decreases of 1,422 and 1,166 unemployed, respectively. The only sector that experienced an increase was the group of people without previous employment, which rose by 5,479 individuals. On a year-over-year basis, unemployment fell by 153,620 people, a 6% decline compared to September 2024.

Regional data revealed a mixed picture, with unemployment rising in some areas while falling nationally. In Granada, the number of unemployed increased by 1,029 people, or 1.54%, largely due to the end of the summer season. The services sector accounted for most of this rise, adding 747 jobless individuals, while construction and agriculture saw declines. Despite the monthly increase, Granada's unemployment was 5.64% lower than a year earlier, though this improvement lagged behind the national average.

In the Balearic Islands, unemployment rose by 86 people in September, but the region's total of 26,054 jobless marked the lowest September figure since 2001. Year-over-year, the islands saw a 6.8% reduction in unemployment. The services sector drove the monthly increase there, while construction and industry recorded declines. The data underscore the varying impacts of seasonal employment patterns across Spain's regions, even as the country overall achieves a milestone in reducing September unemployment to a 18-year low.
