Valencian Government Proposes Language Academy Renaming Amid Political Hurdles

23-09-2025

Valencian President Carlos Mazón has announced plans to rename the region's language regulatory body from the Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua (AVL) to the Acadèmia de la Llengua Valenciana during his General Policy Debate address. The proposal represents one of 44 measures outlined by the Popular Party leader, who emphasized that "Valencian is our own language" but has not received adequate institutional defense. Mazón characterized the original 1998 creation of the AVL under former PP president Eduardo Zaplana as well-intentioned but insufficient for addressing linguistic concerns.

The proposed name change faces significant legislative obstacles, requiring modification of both the AVL's governing law and the Valencian Statute of Autonomy. Current parliamentary arithmetic presents a challenge for Mazón's coalition government, as the PP's 40 seats combined with Vox's 13 seats total only 53 deputies—short of the three-fifths majority (60 votes) needed for statutory changes and well below the two-thirds majority (66 votes) required for Statute reform. The 99-seat parliament includes 31 Socialist deputies and 15 from Compromís, making opposition support essential for any constitutional amendments.

The language academy announcement dominated Mazón's debate presentation, overshadowing other policy initiatives including additional aid packages for victims of last October's devastating floods that caused 229 fatalities. While briefly acknowledging the "visible and painful scar" left by the natural disaster, the president dedicated substantially more attention to linguistic identity issues. The focus aligns with Vox's longstanding criticism of the current academy structure and its advocacy for private entities promoting theories that diverge from international Romance linguistics consensus regarding the unity of Catalan and Valencian.

Mazón's linguistic reform push occurs against a backdrop of ongoing controversy surrounding flood recovery efforts, with victim associations protesting outside Les Corts Valencianes before the debate and accusing the government of implementing "clientelistic aid" programs. The president nevertheless projected confidence during his address, displaying no signs of leadership challenges and affirming his intention to remain in office through the legislative term ending in 2027. The language academy proposal now enters a complex political landscape where parliamentary mathematics and competing regional priorities will determine its viability.
