Tragedy in Santa Susanna: Firefighter Dies Battling Hotel Blaze

26-05-2025

A firefighter tragically lost his life this Sunday while combating a blaze at a hotel located on the Santa Susanna promenade in Barcelona. The incident, which occurred under circumstances still under investigation, has left the community and the Generalitat Fire Brigade in mourning. The emergency call was received at 19:29, prompting the immediate dispatch of eight ground units to the scene.

Upon arrival, emergency teams confirmed that approximately 250 guests had been successfully evacuated from the hotel, preventing further casualties. The fire, which originated in the building's basement, was initially thought to be under control. However, the situation took a dire turn when one of the three firefighters who entered the premises to assess the situation activated a red code alert, signaling a grave emergency.

In response, additional resources were deployed to locate the missing firefighter, with efforts concentrated on smoke-heavy areas and the breaking of skylights to improve ventilation. Despite the rapid and coordinated rescue operation, the firefighter was found in critical condition and, despite receiving immediate medical attention, could not be saved.

The Generalitat Fire Brigade has activated its Psychological Support Group to assist the firefighters involved in the incident, while the General Directorate of Fire Prevention, Extinction, and Rescue has announced an investigation into the tragedy. The local community and officials have expressed their deepest condolences to the firefighter's family, friends, and colleagues, highlighting the risks faced by emergency personnel in the line of duty.
